The Dark side of WhatsApp: WhatsApp Misinformation is creating chaos _ Are you helping it spread?

The message was also accompanied by fake images and videos as its proof and it circulated so widely that it jumped from WhatsApp to mainstream news channels, even influencing global narratives. Later, a CNN Reality Check investigation confirmed that the claim was false. This incident shows how a single WhatsApp message can shape public opinion on a massive scale.
WhatsApp, once just a private messaging platform, has now transformed into a powerful channel in the disinformation network and the question here is _ how did this happen ?

Understanding the disinformation ecosystem
A disinformation ecosystem is a digital environment where false and misleading information is intentionally created and spread to mislead people or push certain political, religious or ideological agendas.
This ecosystem doesn’t work alone, it is powered by a network often called a disinformation supply chain. This chain includes different actors who are responsible for creating, amplifying and spreading false content.
At the start of this chain are content creators, individuals or groups who craft misleading information to serve political or ideological purposes. People who forward these messages without fact checking also become part of this chain; often unknowingly. Some media outlets, in pursuit of high ratings, also contribute by promoting this propaganda. How WhatsApp Encryption Fuels the misinformation ecosystem
WhatsApp’s end to end encryption and privacy features, while designed to protect the users, have also made it a powerful tool for spreading misinformation. Since no one – not even WhatsApp can access or trace the content being shared, it becomes nearly impossible to monitor or verify false claims.
Moreover, WhatsApp groups and broadcasting channels are often used as tools for mass distribution. Creators design content that emotionally triggers users, making them more likely to forward it quickly and widely. This is how WhatsApp has become a key player in the disinformation ecosystem.

Case Studies: When WhatsApp misinformation created global chaos
The 2023 Israel-Palestine war wasn’t the first time when WhatsApp played a central role in spreading false information. WhatsApp private chats have caused serious chaos in several other countries leading to violence fear and public confusion.

India 2018
In 2018, false rumours about child kidnappings were widely circulated across WhatsApp groups in India. These messages emotionally triggered the public, leading to violence. As a result, over 20 people were attacked and killed by angry mobs(BBC,2018). Although this was denied by the government officials, people trusted WhatsApp messages more than official sources.

Brazil 2018
During Brazil’s 2018 election campaign, a large scale political propaganda was campaigned through WhatsApp.(NYT,2018) Messages targeted one party and its candidates spreading misinformation about them, while building support for the rival side. Millions of voters were influenced by these messages and the party behind the propaganda actually won.

Pakistan 2020
In 2020, WhatsApp messages and videos circulated in Pakistan claiming that the COVID 19 vaccine was haram.(AFP,2020) Since Pakistan is a Muslim majority country, this narrative triggered emotional and religious reactions. Other false claims included that the vaccine causes infertility or was a part of a western conspiracy. These hoaxes caused mass vaccine hesitancy and affected the vaccination process seriously.

Recent Examples From Pakistan
In the recent days when there was a situation of floods in Pakistan, many people received different types of fake messages like the flood warnings triggering a situation of emergency; they forwarded it to others without clarifying whether they are true or not. Other fake message traps in which people often fall are for example: you have won a large number of amount in any lucky draw or you have been selected for Benazir income support program e.t.c.

What’s being done to fight WhatsApp misinformation
WhatsApp has taken several steps to break this supply chain of misinformation. One of the best measures is the introduction of forwarding limits, where messages that have already been forwarded multiple times can now only be sent to a single person at a time. This was done to restrict the spread of the miscellaneous messages. Now the messages that are forwarded many times are tagged with “forwarded many times” label so users can recognise that it is not the original content.
WhatsApp has also collaborated with various fact checking organisations. In Pakistan, groups like the digital rights foundation and media matters have launched helplines and chatbots that allow users to send suspicious material and verify its authenticity before forwarding.
All these efforts are important steps forward, but the challenge still remains. Because of WhatsApp’s encryption features and user behaviour, the spread of misinformation has not been fully controlled.

Solutions and Recommendations
One of the most effective ways to deal with the spread of misinformation is by making people digitally literate. If users are properly educated about how to use social media platforms like WhatsApp responsibly, the disinformation ecosystem can be significantly weakened. Moreover, group admins on WhatsApp must be held accountable for the content shared in their groups. They should ensure that rumoured information is not posted and avoid sharing such content themselves.
At last, there is a growing need to develop AI based tools that help detect misinformation and verify the authenticity of forwarded messages. These tools can play a crucial role in preventing the spread of false content.

Conclusion
WhatsApp has become an active source in the global misinformation ecosystem. Through it, an entire chain of conspiracies and disinformation is operating. The privacy features that were created to protect users are now being used to manipulate those same users.
The dark side of WhatsApp has become visible across many countries. Although WhatsApp has tried to enhance its features to stop the spread of misinformation, the challenge still hasn’t been fully countered.
Now the real question is; how can we contribute to fixing this?
It starts with a simple action; never forward any message without fact checking it first. And never allow your mind or your beliefs to be hijacked by these propagandas. We may not be able to stop lies from being created, but we can stop ourselves from becoming a part of this supply chain
