For a developing country like Pakistan, the critical question is not whether we need AI, but how urgently and strategically we integrate it into our national framework.
The Global Importance of AI. Artificial Intelligence is not merely a software or a computer program—it is an entire ecosystem powered by machine learning, deep learning, neural networks, and automated systems. According to the United Nations and PwC, AI is projected to contribute over $15.7 trillion to the global GDP by 2030. The United States and China are leading this digital race, investing billions into AI research, infrastructure, and talent development. AI in Pakistan: Where Do We Stand? Pakistan’s AI landscape remains underdeveloped, with limited research, infrastructure, and policy implementation. Although the government announced the “Artificial Intelligence Policy 2022,” its implementation has yet to make any significant impact. In contrast, India’s “AI for All” initiative, launched in 2020, has fostered thousands of AI startups, skill development programs, and smart city projects. Pakistan’s IT exports reached approximately $2.6 billion in FY2023, yet the share of AI-based services is minimal. There is a major gap between potential and execution.
AI and the Economy: Transforming Core Sectors. AI has immense potential to revolutionize Pakistan’s economy across various domains: first, agriculture, Pakistan’s agriculture sector contributes around 19% to GDP and employs over 38% of the labor force.
